5 tips for inclusive workplaces

Start strong

These tips were developed through the SydWest Backswing Program by people with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, drawing on their ideas and experiences of what helps people succeed at work.

TIP 1

Ask, don’t assume

Every person is different. Take the time to ask what support, adjustments, or learning approaches help your new employee succeed, rather than making assumptions about what they can or cannot do.

Participant Voice:
“Don’t assume I can’t do it. Just ask me how I do things best.”

TIP 2

Create a culture of respect

Help people feel accepted for who they are. Respect cultural backgrounds, different communication styles, and individual abilities from day one.

Participant Voice:
“It makes a difference when people try to understand my culture.”

TIP 3

Keep communication clear

Use plain language, check for understanding, and demonstrate tasks where possible. Clear communication builds confidence and reduces mistakes.

Participant Voice:
“It helps when people show me instead of just talking fast.”

TIP 4

Help people feel they belong

Small actions can make a big difference. Include new employees in team conversations, activities, and everyday workplace interactions.

Participant Voice:
“If I feel like I belong, I will give my best at work.”

TIP 5

Assign a workplace buddy

Having a trusted person to ask questions and provide guidance helps new employees settle in faster and feel more confident in their new role.

Participant Voice:
“Having one person I can go to makes it less scary.”

Small changes. Big impact.

Inclusive onboarding benefits everyone. When people feel welcome, understood, and supported, they are more likely to stay, contribute, and succeed.
